Netanyahu Returns to Power After Tightly Contested Election

Veteran Politician Known as "Bibi" Assumes Premiership for Sixth Term

Jerusalem, Israel - Benjamin Netanyahu, the veteran Israeli politician known as "Bibi," has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Israel. The ceremony took place at the President's Residence in Jerusalem on Thursday, November 10, 2022.

Netanyahu's return to power comes after a tightly contested election that saw him narrowly defeat his main rival, Benny Gantz. Netanyahu's Likud party won 32 seats in the 120-member Knesset, while Gantz's Blue and White party won 33 seats. However, Netanyahu was able to form a coalition government with several smaller parties, giving him a majority in the legislature.

This is Netanyahu's sixth term as Prime Minister, making him the longest-serving leader in Israeli history. He previously held the office from 1996 to 1999 and again from 2009 to 2021. Netanyahu is a controversial figure, known for his strong support for Israeli settlements in the West Bank and his opposition to a two-state solution with the Palestinians.
